PROVO -- In their second and final exhibition game in 2008, the Cougars beat the visiting Dixie State Rebels 77-40 on Saturday at the Marriott Center.

“We had a good game today,” said head coach Jeff Judkins. “Dixie played well, but I really liked what we did in the second half. We didn’t have good ball movement in the first half and had some trouble on defense, but the second half was a lot better.”

The two teams played a back-and-forth first half, with neither team leading by more than – points. Neither team started quickly, but the Rebels were able to build a seven-point lead by the 12:45 mark. The Cougars clawed their way back into the game, staying within five points for most of the rest of the half before taking the lead 21-19 at the 6:26 mark on a Sarah Red-Hostetter baseline jumper.

BYU slowly expanded the lead over the last six minutes and went into the break with a seven point lead, 33-26. BYU made 17-40 (42.5%) field goals in the half, holding Dixie State to just 9-40 shooting (22.5%). The Cougars out-rebounded the Rebels 34-25.

With a fast start to the second half, the Cougars came out running and increased their lead to 45-29 on a 12-3 run just five minutes in. Back-to-back steals from guard Haley Hall fueled the run, which included consecutive fast-break layups from Hall and sophomore guard Mindy Nielson.

The Cougars would continue to pull away throughout the rest of the second half. Three-pointers from Dani Peterson and Coriann Wood, a jumper from Jenteal Jackson, and two more free-throws from Wood would give the team a 33-point lead, 65-32, with 5:38 left in the game. The Cougars would hold on for the final margin. Wood led the Cougars with 11 points, and freshman Kristen Riley had at team-high six boards. Every player on the bench saw action for the Cougars, and all but two scored. BYU’s defense limited Dixie State to 14 points in the second half.

“I’m excited about our depth,” said Judkins. “We’ve got a lot of girls that can come in and play.”

BYU heads out on the road to begin to regular season, travelling to Portland to face Portland State at Fri., Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. The team then faces Nevada in Reno on Tue., Nov. 18 before the team’s home-opener against Pac-10 power Oregon, Friday, Nov. 21 at 3:30 p.m.

Live stat and audio feeds will be available for both road games and the home opener. The feeds can be accessed at www.byucougars.com/basketball_w/.
