No. 20 Women Down Colorado State
PROVO -- In front of a season-high 2,024 fans, No. 20 BYU defeated Colorado State in a 70-54 rout Saturday in the Marriott Center.
"I was proud of the way our team held together tonight," head coach Jeff Judkins said. "We played as a team and had a balanced offensive attack."
The Cougars started off the half strong with Jennie Keele draining a three pointer on BYU's first possession, followed with two free throws by Dani Kubik to give the Cougars an early 5-0 lead.
BYU's tenacious defense prevented the Rams for getting on the board until the 3:30 mark when Casie Shepherd put in a jumper.
Kubik immediately countered with a turnaround jumpshot of her own. Colorado State responded with back-to-back buckets, forcing Judkins to call a timeout. Following the break, Nancy Seljass, Shawnee Slade and Lauren Riley entered the lineup and ignited a fire under the BYU team.
The Cougars went on a 16-0 tear over four-minute period, finally finding their rhythm. Seljaas and Kubik started off the streak with two three pointers, followed with buckets by Ambrosia Anderson, Kubik and Mallary Gillespie. Kubik hit two free throws, and Vanessa Hutson made a hard drive before Molly Nohr finally made a free throw, giving BYU a 20-point lead, 32-12
Anderson also found her stroke after hitting her first buckets with nine minutes remaining in the half. She finished the half with 10 points, including two three-pointers.
BYU went into the half with a 42-21 advantage, the most points the Cougars have scored in the first half this season, as well as the most points scored in a half during conference games.
Colorado State played BYU even in the second half. The Rams scored the first four points of the half before the Cougars went on a 10-2 run, including back-to-back three pointers from Seljaas and Gillespie.
Sara Hunter responded with her third three pointer of the game, the only Ram to hit a three pointer to make the score 56-32.
The Rams played BYU close the remainder of the half as the Cougars only outscored CSU by five points in the second half.
Kubik and Hunter led all scorers with 15 points apiece. Marilyn Moulton of CSU posted a game-high nine rebounds. Kubik grabbed eight boards for the Cougars, while Anderson added 14 points and seven rebounds.
"Kubik's playing really well right now. She's playing with a lot of confidence and scoring the ball well."
BYU shot 40.9 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from the free-throw line, while Colorado State hit only 28.8 percent of its shots from the field and 88.2 percent of its free throws.
The Cougars host No. 17 New Mexico on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center.
"These next two home games are huge," Judkins said. "New Mexico is going to be a battle. They're a very good team, which will make it a great game. Hopefully we can get four- to five-thousand people out."
