LOS -- The BYU women's basketball team upset powerhouse UCLA, 71-67, Tuesday evening in California. Laruen Riley led the Cougars with a double-double that included a career high 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Head coach Jeff Judkins was visibly pleased with Riley's efforts, which earned Riley her first career double-double.

"Lauren Riley had one of the best games of her career," he said.

The game was a barnburner with neither team earning more than a four-point lead for most of the first half. Thanks to three-point bucket at the buzzer by freshman Shawnee Slade, the Cougars finished the half with a six-point lead.

UCLA came out strong in the second half of action, regaining the lead on a three-point play by Lindsey Pluimer at 14:04.

Both teams struggled to keep a lead during the second half, as each team was able to come up with big plays. After losing the lead with just under eight minutes left in the game, Dani Kubik and Mallary Gillespie scored back-to-back goals, giving BYU a lead it would keep the remainder of the game.

BYU out rebounded the Bruins 52-27. The Cougars shot 49 percent from the field and 22 percent from the line, making just two of nine shots. UCLA made 44 percent of its shots from the field and 48 percent of its free throws.

Ambrosia Anderson led all scorers with 26 points and nine rebounds.

For UCLA four players scored in double digits: Nikki Blue scored 19 points, Noelle Quinn posted 16, Lisa Willis netted 13, and Linsey Pluimer scored ten.

"This was a great win for our program," said Judkins. "We showed a lot of heart and determination. Our inside players were very physical and we also had a great defensive effort. We didn't give them any second or third chance points."

The Cougars return home for their first home stand against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. in the Marriott Center.
