Six Score in Double Figures in Victory

PROVO -- In its final tune up before the regular season begins, BYU fired past Mesa State, 98-64, Friday at the Marriott Center.

All of the Cougars contributed, with only two players tallying more than 20 minutes in the game. BYU head coach Jeff Judkins was pleased with the way his team played.

"It was a nice game for us," Judkins said. "We played better in this game than we did against Westminster, which is encouraging."

BYU jumped out early, getting a quick 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The early run was capped by a Jennie Keele three-point play. Keele and Mallary Gillespie each scored five early points.

Mesa State played the Cougars evenly over the next five minutes using hustle to cut the BYU lead to 22-16. Vanessa Hutson, Nancy Seljaas and Gillespie each nailed three pointers and Cassie King added a six-foot hook shot for the Cougars to answer the Mavericks run.

During the final nine minutes of the first half, BYU put together a 29-11 run to take a comfortable 52-27 lead into intermission. The 25-point halftime lead was due to red-hot shooting by the Cougars in the first half. BYU was 19-for-31 (61.3%) from the field including 6-for-12 behind the three-point arch.

Early in the second half, Ambrosia Anderson scored 10 points in six minutes to pace the Cougars and extend their lead.

"Ambrosia could have score 30 or 40 if I would have left her in there today," Judkins said.

BYU played with a variety of lineups. All 13 Cougars that dressed played in the game, 12 BYU players scored. Six Cougars scored in double figures, led by Andersons 16. Gillespie added 13 and dished out a team-high five assists.

Mesa State was led in points by Brittany Rowley and Brittany Fowler, who each scored 13 points.

The Cougars start regular-season play on the road November 19 when they play Cal State-Northridge.
