Kozlowski's Career-High Points Leads Women In Win Over Nevada
PROVO -- Kristen Kozlowski and Mallary Gillespie shot a combined 17 for 23 to lead the BYU women's basketball team over the Nevada Wolf Pack, on Wednesday, 81-64.
The Cougars led from the opening tip to the final horn. Gillespie, a 5-10 freshman from Orem, sparked the Cougars early, nailing four 3-pointers in the first half. Gillespie's hot shooting got the Cougars out to a 34-14 lead with less than seven minutes left to play in the first half.
She finished the game, shooting 7-10 from beyond the arc, just two 3-pointers short of a school record set by Erin Thorn in 2001 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
BYU coach Jeff Judkins said Gillespie is a great shooter and is only going to get better.
"She does a lot more than just shoot well," Judkins said. "She does a lot of things that people don't see."
As much as Gillespie dominated from the outside, senior forward Kozlowski dominated from the inside. Kozlowski set career-highs in points, 21, and rebounds with seven. She finished the day shooting an amazing 10-13. Judkins said her performance in the game was the best he's ever seen her play.
"If she hadn't played that well, we wouldn't have won," Judkins said.
Kozlowski was the leader of a dominate inside game from the Cougars. The Cougars outscored the Wolf Pack 26-10 in the paint.
Forward Ambrosia Anderson added another 15 points for the Cougars, collecting eight boards to help dominate the paint. Judkins said senior Danielle Chessman played a solid game despite some match-up problems caused by a trio of Nevada forwards. The 6-2 forward finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Nevada made a17- 7 run to end the first half and to close the Cougar lead to 42-31. The Wolf Pack came out aggressive in the second half and cut the lead to 57-52 with 12 minutes left in the game.
"We got up by 17 and we stopped defending, maybe we got tired," Judkins said. "But all of a sudden, we got our second wind."
The Cougars used the next five minutes to go on a 16-4 run, when Kozlowski and Gillespie teamed up for a good inside-outside combo to push the lead back to 17.
The Cougars piled on 81 points against the Wolf Pack, the first time they've scored 80-plus points since Dec. 30, 2003. Judkins said he was pleased with the win.
"Nevada's a good team," he said. "I can have a happy Thanksgiving now after this win."
Freshman forward Meghan McGuire led Nevada with 19 points, while shooting 3-4 on 3-pointers. BYU guard Julie Sullivan chipped in 14 points, five assists and four steals, making for a nice all-around game for the senior.
The Cougars return to action against the No. 24 Arizona Wildcats at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Marriott Center.
