Road Woes Continue for Cougars in 57-50 Loss
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The Cougars fell to 0-2 in the Mountain West Conference for the first time since 1997-98, losing 57-50 at Wyoming Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Julie Sullivan came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points in Saturday's loss, while sophomore Ambrosia Anderson contributed 12. Anderson also gave the Cougars a huge lift as she hit two big-three pointers in the final minute of the game to cut the Wyoming lead to just three points. Jennie Overdiek also added 9 points. The Cowgirls were led by Ashley Elliott with 16 points.
In a first-half defensive battle, both teams came out cold as BYU scored just three points and Wyoming just six in the first ten minutes of the game. BYU Head Coach Jeff Judkins played 13 Cougars in the first half hoping to find a winning combination. Wyoming ended the half on a 13-2 run, going into the locker room leading 31-18.
The Cougars showed some life of their own in the second half, putting together two 11-2 runs and eventually cutting a 16-point Wyoming lead to just three with 29 seconds left in the game. However, missed rebounds and turnovers cost the Cougars as Wyoming came on strong to wrap up the victory.
"We need to make plays when we have to," said Judkins. "We got ourselves in a hole and couldn't get out of it."
Both teams shot just 32 percent from the floor, and Wyoming shot a dismal nine percent from three-point range.
Free-throw woes continued for the Cougars, as Wyoming shot a near-perfect 13-15 from the line in the first half and finished 21-25. The Cougars managed to shoot just 2-5 from the stripe in the first half and ended the game 12-17. Turnovers have also consistently plagued the Cougars. BYU committed 15 turnovers in Saturday's loss, leading to 18 Cowgirl points, and 20 turnovers in last Thursday's loss to Colorado State.
The seven-point margin of victory is identical to the margin in last year's Cougar loss at Wyoming. The loss drops the Cougars to 10-6 on the season and 0-2 in Conference while Wyoming improves to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in the MWC. The Cougars will next be in action on Thursday Jan. 22 as they take on the New Mexico Lobos at home in the Marriott Center. Tip-off is set for 7 PM.
