Cougars Three-Game Road Winning Streak Stopped By Wildcats

Tucson, AZ. (Dec. 12, 2003) At the tail end of a two-week, four-game road swing, the Cougar women dropped a disappointing 83-69 game to the University of Arizona, Friday.

Prior to the loss, the Cougars had won three straight road games.

With the clock showing just 1:21 to go in the game, the visiting BYU team was still in the game just down by 10 after two straight field goals from Danielle Cheesman. But they were forced to send the Wildcats to the free throw line where sophomore guard Natalie Jones put in Arizona's six of its last 10 points. Jones also made the game's final field goal at the buzzer. The road loss puts BYU's record at 5-3 on the season, while Arizona improves to 6-2 and extends their home winning streak to 17 straight.

"We didn't execute as well as we should have tonight," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "We made a couple of good runs and they'd come back with some big plays and that made a difference."

In the first half of action, the Cougars trailed for the entire 20 minutes of action, but never let Arizona get ahead by more than nine points, and by ten only once with just under two minutes to go. Two treys by Melinda Johnsen and Nancy Seljaas cut the lead to six, and BYU went into the locker room down 33-39.

Cheesman had a team high 14 points while teammate Ashleigh Chamberlain led the way in the rebound category with 11 for BYU. Kali Taylor and Nancy Seljaas also scored in double figures, each tallying 13 points.

For the Wildcats, it was sophomore center Shawntinice Polk leading all scores with 24 points. Natalie Jones followed with 20 points. Arizona out rebounded BYU 43 to 33 and shot 100 percent from the free throw line in the second half.

BYU is finally at home for two games to finish the month of December. On the 20th Idaho State comes to the Marriott Center in a 1 p.m., tip off. Then on Dec. 30, the Cougars host Southern Utah in a 7 p.m., start time.
