Cheesman Leads in Cougar Win Over Mount St. Mary's
Anchorage, AK. (Nov. 26, 2003) Danielle Cheesman's 18 points make it easy for BYU to topple Mount St. Mary's 70-47 Wednesday, in the consolation game of the women's Great America Shootout.
Cheesman's fifth career double double with 18 points and game high 12 rebounds also garnered her Player of the Game honors.
The Cougar team improves to 2-1 on the season while the Mountaineers drop to 0-3.
Unlike Tuesday night's game, BYU led early in this contest, up by as many as 19 points in the first half, taking an 18-point, 41-23 advantage after the first 20 minutes of action.
Nancy Seljaas came off the bench with her impressive performance, tallying a career and season high 16 points in the first half, 15 of those coming from three-point range.
"I'm happy with what's going on with our team at this point," said Jeff Judkins after the game. "We had key players step it up when they needed to and that's a positive for us. Some nights it might be one player, another night someone different and that's okay as long as it keeps happening. Danielle had a good night, so did Nancy and Kestlee Dooley."
For Mount St. Mary's it was their third straight loss of the season after losing by just two points on Tuesday night to hosts Alaska Anchorage. Myriam Baccouche led with 13 points followed with Jillian Franklin grabbing team high 11 rebounds for the Mountaineers.
BYU finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field, 39 percent (9-23) from three-point range and 77 percent from the free throw line. Cheesman was perfect (8-8) from the line.
The Cougars are at home for their first game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 29, hosting TCU in a 2 p.m., tip off from the Marriott Center.
