Anderson Leads Cougar Effort in Disappointing Loss to Clemson
ANCHORAGE -- Sophomore Ambrosia Anderson came off the bench to record her first career double-double in BYU's 56-62 loss to Clemson. Anderson totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds in the six-point loss.
The Cougars are one of four women's teams participating in this year's Great Alaska Shootout.
Junior guard Julie Sullivan also came off the bench to spark the BYU team with 14 points; all scored in the second half. Sullivan put the Cougars within reach with just over three minutes left in the game with back-to-back field goals for a 55-53 Clemson lead. But the Cougars were forced to foul forcing the Tigers to the foul line where Lakeia Stokes and Amanda White put in the final six points for Clemson.
"We showed some character when we were making a run there in the final minutes," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "We just need to get smarter mentally and understand what needs to be done in the game."
Despite being down by as many as 11 points in the first period, the Cougar women battled back cutting the Clemson lead to just four points, 27-31 at the break. BYU had the lead just once in the entire game, at the 2:36 mark of the first half when Anderson took advantage of Tiger turnovers, picking up three straight field goals for a 27-25 Cougar lead.
Guard Julie Talley was one of four Tigers who scored in double figures in the contest with 14 points. Stokes also had a double double scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 13 boards. Clemson shot 39 percent from the field and 73 from the free throw line while the Cougars finished the game with 35 percent shooting form the field and 70 from the line.
BYU, 1-1 on the year will play Mount St. Mary's for third place on Wed. Nov. 26, at 2:30 p.m., Alaska Time, 4:30 p.m., Mountain. Clemson will play hosts Alaska Anchorage at 5 p.m. The BYU game can be heard live on BYU Radio.
