Season High Points Lift Cougars Past Falcons
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. (Mar. 6, 2003) Three BYU players score in double figures as the Cougar women pick up a season high 96 points in the league win over the Air Force Academy. The Falcons scored 55 points in the contest.
The win improves the Cougars' record to 17-9, 8-5 on the year, while the Air Force Academy falls to 7-19, 1-12. After Thursday's games, BYU is tied with New Mexico for second place in the tournament seeding for next week. The Lobos defeated regular season champions Utah in Albuquerque 51-48.
After enjoying a 15-point lead at the break, the Cougar women continued their high scoring effort into the second half of basketball. All-American senior guard Erin Thorn who led all scores with 21 points, made a three pointer at the 15:07 mark to give BYU a 22-point 61-39 lead. Another Thorn trey three minutes later and the Cougars were up by 25, 70 to 45.
With just over eight minutes left in the contest, BYU's Angie Gatten puts in her second three-pointer of the night and the lead is at 35, 80-45.
Coach Jeff Judkins pulled out his starting lineup with over four minutes remaining, providing quality minutes for his bench players. And with 1:44 showing on the clock, Ambrosia Anderson gave the BYU team another 35-point advantage with another trey and the score is 90 to 45. Then the Falcons had three straight scoring opportunities, but missed all of them. Two turnovers later and BYU had gotten six more points on the scoreboard finishing with a season high of 96.
"I was very please d with our team effort and the intensity with which we played tonight," Judkins said. "We shot the ball well, played great defense and we had great games from Amy Lewis and Angie Gatten, as well as from Kristin Kozlowski."
Gatten finished the game with a season high eight points. Kozlowski scored a season high 10 points.
The game was close for the first few minutes of action but a Kali Taylor jumper at the 13:35 mark put the Cougars up by two 13-11 and from then on it was all BYU. At the break, the team headed into the locker with a 15-point, 48-33 lead.
BYU travels to Albuquerque to round out MWC play on Sat. in a 2 p.m., tip off with New Mexico. That game will most likely decide the second and third seeds for next week's conference tournament from Las Vegas.
