Cougars Fall to the Utes on the Road
Salt Lake City (March 1, 2003)-- In MWC women's hoop action, BYU women's basketball team dropped a close game to the Utes on the road 71-66. The Cougars' record goes to 16-9, 7-5 while Utah clinched the MWC championship with a 21-4, 11-1 record.
With 25 seconds remaining in the game Lisa Hansen was charged with an intentional foul, giving Utah two free throws for a 69-64 lead and the ball. Utah made a few more charity shots at the end to give them the 71-66 win.
BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said, "We got ourselves in a hole and that's hard to do on the road. I was proud of the way our team hung in there. We had our chances in the end but we just didn't come up with them."
Utah took an early 19-point lead off a 19-0 run within the first 10 minutes of the game. Ten of the 19 points for Utah came off of BYU turnovers. The Cougars cut into the Utes' lead by hitting 7 of 13 three-pointers to come within 3 points, 67-64. The Cougars never led in the game.
Kali Taylor received the start in place of the injured Jeni Overdiek, who was injured during Monday's practice and was unable to participate n the team's practices for the remainder of the week. Taylor's start made it the eighth different starting line-up the Cougars have put together this season. Taylor scored a career-high 16 points in 29 minutes.
Kestlee Nelson led the Cougars in scoring with a career-high 17 points, making 3 of 5 three pointers. All-American Erin Thorn recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 assists.
"I was impressed with the play of Kali and Kestlee, they both set it up and that's good for our team," Judkins said.
