Cougars Suffer Third Loss In MWC Action

Laramie, WY. (Feb. 13, 2002) It was Wyoming's strong inside game that aided in the Cowgirls 66-59 victory over the Cougars in MWC women's basketball action, Thursday.

The Wyoming victory over BYU puts both schools tied for second place in the conference standings with 5-3 records.

Midway through the second half the Cowgirls went on a 7-0 run to take a 51-44 lead and held on for the seven-point win. With 1:11 left in the game, Danielle Cheesman brought the Cougars within three, 59-62, with a jump shot underneath the basket, but it was as close as BYU could get.

In the final seconds the Cougars were forced to foul, sending the Cowgirls to the line for the final four points of the game. BYU's two big players Ashleigh Chamberlain and Lisa Hansen fouled out of the game. The Cougars finished the night shooting 41 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line, going to the charity stripe just eight times, compared with 32 for Wyoming.

"Wyoming came out in the second half more aggressive. They didn't let us get the ball down low and that hurt us," said BYU coach Jeff Judkins. "We seemed to be very clouded mentally tonight. We were not physically tired, but we just didn't seem to be there mentally," added Judkins.

All-American Erin Thorn had a team-high 17 points and grabbed a team-high six boards. Danielle Cheesman also scored in double figures with 14 points and five rebounds.

For Wyoming, Ann McColl led all scores with 18 points. Ashley Elliott had 13 and Brenda Pickup tallied 10 for the night.

BYU remains on the road for a match-up against CSU on Saturday afternoon. That game will air live at 3 p.m. on ESPN2 and can also be heard via the Internet at byuradio.org.
