Cougars Pick-up MWC Win Over Lobos

PROVO -- Off a strong defensive performance, BYU defeats New Mexico 57-46. The win improves the Cougars record to 13-6, 4-2, while the Lobos fall to 13-6, 3-3.

The defense held New Mexico scoreless for nearly 10 minutes for a season low 18 first-half points, the previous low for UNM was 20 against USC. Despite a poor shooting half for BYU, 28 percent, the Cougars put together a 20-0 run to overcome an 18-8 score in the first half.

BYU Head Coach Jeff Judkins was pleased with the team's defensive effort, "We played sloppy on offense, but we played really good defense."

The Cougars were led by sophomore forward Danielle Cheesman, who scored a team high 11 points and pulled in nine rebounds. Ambrosia Anderson, a freshman forward, gave BYU a strong performance off the bench, grabbing a season and career high 11 rebounds and scoring nine points.

"I feel I have to do more, like get the rebounds, in order to make up for the loss of Leitner," Ambrosia said.

BYU had a slow shooting performance finishing with just 33 percent (22-65) from the field for the game and eight percent (2-24) in 3-point shooting. New Mexico did not shoot much better, just 37 percent (20-54) from the field.

The leading scorer and rebounder for the Lobos was Jordan Adams with 16 points, nine rebounds.

BYU hosts Air Force on Saturday at 1 p.m.
