Women Undefeated In MWC With Win Over Aztecs

San Diego, CA., (Jan. 23, 2003) Led by All-American Erin Thorn, BYU's women's basketball team continued its winning ways with a 61-46 MWC victory over SDSU, Thursday.

With a comfortable 48-27 lead with just 10 minutes left in the game, the visiting BYU team got a scare from San Diego State when they went on a 17-9 run to cut the lead to single digits, 53-44 with 3:48 left. But with some clutch points at the foul line from Erin Thorn and a field goal by Danielle Cheesman, the Cougar women were able to hold on to the lead eventually winning by 15.

All-American Erin Thorn continued her strong play with a game- high 20 points and four rebounds. Freshman Ambrosia Anderson also had a great performance, picking up a season high 12 points coming off the bench and playing just nine minutes. Danielle Cheesman also tallied 12 points and grabbed six boards.

Since the start of MWC action a week ago, the Cougars have compiled a 3-0 record with their latest win over the Aztecs and are 12-4 overall.

Veronica Shaw led the San Diego State effort with 14 points, the only player to score in double figures for the Aztecs. Ashley Dunlap had game- high 10 rebounds in the game. SDSU shot 32 percent from the field, missing all six attempts from behind the arc. In the rebound category the Cougars grabbed four more rebounds for a total of 33 in the game.

The Cougars continue MWC play on the road, traveling to La Vegas for a Saturday night league game against UNLV. The game can be heard live on byuradio.org

For San Diego State who fell to 6-8, 0-2 on the year, get ready to host the University of Utah on Saturday.
