First of Three Road Games Ends in Win For Cougar Women

Cedar City, UT (Dec. 3, 2002) Eight three pointers by All-American Erin Thorn was more than enough for the 19th ranked BYU women's basketball team to defeat instate opponent Southern Utah 75-49, Tuesday.

Thorn scored 21 of her 24 points from behind the arc in the contest, including three straight to spark a 25-8 run by the Cougars and give them a comfortable 28-15 lead with just over eight minutes to go in the first half.

BYU continued its strong shooting effort in the early minutes of the second half going on an 11-3 run to take the biggest lead of the game at 52-30 with 16:30 to go.

The Cougars shot 46 percent from the field that included a high 14-of-27 from the perimeter.

"We had a great defensive effort tonight and we were able to give some playing time to our younger players which is definitely a plus for us," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins.

The Cougars held the Thunderbirds to just 25 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded them by eight, 46-38. Southern Utah was leading the nation in rebound margin until they met up against BYU.

"We need to keep getting better and better with each game and cut down our mental mistakes," added Judkins.

Thorn finished the night with season highs in points (24) and in three-pointers (8), had four assists and three steals. Jennifer Leitner had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds while teammate Danielle Cheesman contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in a very solid performance.

For Southern Utah it was a 10-point night apiece for starters Lacey Yates and Casey Cook, with Cooke also picking up a career-high seven steals in the game. The Thunderbirds shot 27 percent from the field and 52 percent from the free throw line.

Tuesday's game was the first of three road games for the Cougar team this week. With the win, BYU improves to 4-0 on the year, while the Thunderbirds fall to 2-1.

BYU travels to the bay area for a Thursday night contest against the University of San Francisco. The two teams have not played each other in more than 15 years. Cougar fans can follow the action on BYU radio by clicking on www.byuradio.org
