Great Rebounding Leads Cougars to Victory Over Boise State

Provo, UT (Nov. 27, 2002) Domination in the paint led the BYU women's basketball team to a 67-53 victory over Boise State, Wednesday at the Marriott Center. The no. 22 Cougars posted their second win of the season, while the Broncos dropped to 1-2.

BYU jumped to an early lead, and although Boise State never let up, the Cougars maintained the lead the entire game. The biggest difference was in rebounding, with BYU outrebounding Boise State 46 to 33. At the end of the first half, Boise State had grabbed only two offensive rebounds to the Cougars' nine.

Forward Jennifer Leitner led the team with 17 rebounds and 18 points, racking up the 12th double-double of her career and matching her career high for rebounds. All-American senior guard Erin Thorn also scored 18 points and shot 4-8 from the three-point line.

Defensively, Lisa Hansen controlled the paint with six blocks, a career best and two blocks more than any player recorded last season. Leitner and Hansen teamed up for a total of nine blocks. Thorn and Julie Sullivan both dished out seven assists, and Thorn tallied four steals.

Despite the winning performance, BYU head coach Jeff Judkins feels there is room for improvement. "The team played very selfish," he said. "It is the most selfish I have ever seen them play. It happens when you take a shot whenever you want."

Judkins related the choice of shots to a buffet. He said, "If you can eat all you want, why would you fill up on salad? Instead wait for the better shot."

Thorn said the team relaxed too early. "We got complacent," she said. "We just didn't take it as serious as we need to, and I hope that doesn't happen again."

Jamie Hawkins led Boise State in scoring with 17 points, and forward Camille Woodfield led the Broncos in rebounding with nine.

The Cougars came into the game after a big win against 12th ranked Texas, and will next face Weber State Saturday at 4 p.m., at the Marriott Center.
