Thorn And Cougars Upset No. 11 Texas
Provo, UT (Nov. 22, 2002) It was a meeting of two Sweet Sixteen teams from last year, but only one team played like one. That team was the BYU women who upset 11th ranked Texas 79-63, Friday.
Both teams played hard and physical in the early minutes of the game and both teams got in foul trouble. But it was the depth of the Cougar bench that made the difference in the first half of play. BYU Head Coach Jeff Judkins substituted early and often keeping the Texas team guessing and giving all the momentum to the Cougars. Texas had some easy scoring opportunities late in the first half but missed four foul shots when BYU was up 30-21 with 3:16 left. The Longhorns took a tim outwith 2:06 showing on the clock and answered back with six points, 30-27. But BYU held on in the final seconds to take a slim 34-32 advantage at the break.
In the second half everything was clicking for the Cougars who scored 21 unanswered points to take a 55-39 lead with 11:33 to go in the game. BYU's smothering defense combined with poor shooting by the visiting Texas team led to their seven points in the first nine minutes of the second half.
The 16-point lead was extended by as much as 23 points, 70-47 with just under five minutes to play in the game.
"I was really happy with our total team effort tonight," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "This team's been through some tough games and that's why we scheduled this game. When you play against a tough team that's well coached, it makes you play harder."
Coach Judkins also credited the defensive play of seniors Jennifer Leitner and Erin Thorn. "I think Jen Leitner had one of her best games and Erin is playing very good defense for us right now," he added.
Thorn led all scores in the contest with 19 points and six rebounds while Leitner contributed 18 points and a team high seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Danielle Cheesman had 13 points in the game with senior forward Lisa Hansen tallying 11 points and four rebounds.
"Everything was clicking for us, we had great defense," said All-American Erin Thorn. "We let Texas have a few shots that we shouldn't have, but we are a lot better now then where we were when we played them last year at the beginning of our season."
For the Texas Longhorns it was guard Jamie Carey leading her team effort with 17 points. Two teammates also scored in double digits with Heather Schreiber tallying 12 and Tai Dillard 11. The Longhorns shot a low 28 percent from the field, just 23 percent in the second half of play.
The Cougars finished the contest outrebounding the Longhorns 47 to 41 and shot 43 percent from the field and 79 percent from the free throw line.
BYU continues basketball play at home next week, hosting Boise State on Nov. 27 and Weber State on Nov. 30.
