Big Second Half Carries Cougars to Victory
PROVO -- A big second-half run ignited BYU's women's basketball team to a 77-58 exhibition victory over Team Concepts Thursday in the Marriott Center. Team Concepts roster consists of former college stars. Each player on the roster has professional basketball experience.
BYU broke open the game with 14 straight points as part of an 18-6 run to open the second half, building a 64-40 advantage with 6:57 remaining in the game. Showing off the team's depth, BYU coach Jeff Judkins substituted liberally as 10 different Cougars scored during the critical run, including three-pointers by Julie Sullivan and Kali Taylor.
The two teams battled the first 20 minutes, sharing the lead seven times through six lead changes. BYU owned the largest first-half advantage of five points when freshman Ambrosia Anderson's two free throws gave BYU a 30-25 lead at the 4:18 mark. Team Concepts answered with eight straight points to claim a 33-30 lead before the Cougars evened the scoring on at 34-34 going into the break. Erin Thorn scored BYU's final four points of the half on her way to a game-high 13 first-half points.
Thorn finished the game with a team-leading 15 points while Anderson and Danielle Cheesman each added 12. In all, 12 Cougars scored and 16 players got in the game. Cheesman pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Lisa Hansen swatted away three opponent shots.
The Cougars shot 41.7 percent from the floor and put up 29 threes, making seven. Even though BYU held Team Concepts to 29 percent shooting, Judkins wasn't entirely pleased with his team's play.
"I wasn't really happy with our defensive effort," Judkins said. "In a game like this, the players are mostly thinking about offense. We'll have a fun film session tomorrow. Ambrosia (Anderson) is a great player. If she learns how to play defense she can become an All-American."
Jamie Redd, who finished her college career at Washington before playing for the WNBA's Seattle Storm, led Team Concepts with 16 points. Beatrice Bullock, who played at Iowa before going overseas to compete professionally, added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
BYU completes its exhibition schedule Nov. 19 when it hosts Westminster College at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center.
