Rams Tough At Home, Hold Off Cougars in Conference Play

Ft. Collins, CO (Feb. 15, 2001) On their second to the last road conference game of the season, BYU's women's basketball team stayed in the game until the very end, but came out just five points short, with MWC foe CSU getting the 77-72 win, Thursday.

The loss drops the Cougar women to 14-9, 6-4 on the year, while the Rams improve to 18-4, 7-2.

With just three and a half minutes left in the game the score was tied 68-68. A minute later, CSU took the lead for the first time and held onto it, going to the free-throw line for their final six points.

"We played them very tough, got off to a good start and created a lot of turnovers," said head coach Trent Shippen. "They (CSU) just shot a little better then we did. Stacy Jensen had a great game and I'm very proud of our team."

Jensen led the BYU effort with 16 points, three rebounds and five assists on the night. Caroline Beus had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. All-American Erin Thorn contributed with 10 points, five assists and five steals. The Cougars shot 40 percent from the field and 87 percent at the free-throw line.

For the Rams, Ashley Augspurger and Heather Haanen had 16 points piece, joined by Shannon Strecker's 11 and Angie Gorton's 10. CSU shot 51 percent from the field, shooting 57 percent from behind the arc in the second half.

The Cougars travel to Laramie for their final conference road game, as they take on Wyoming in a 2 p.m. tip off on Saturday.
