Season Opener On The Road

BYU's women's basketball season gets under way this week with two road games. The Cougars tip off the year with a game at Boise State on Fri., Nov. 16, then travel to Austin to take on the University of Texas, Nov. 20.

Scouting Boise State

The Broncos compiled an 12-17, 7-7 finish last season. They've played two exhibition games and Friday's game is their season opener. Boise State returns four starters from the 2000-01 team which includes their three top scorers and their top two rebounders. The Broncos averaged 61.5 points a game and shot 41 percent from the field and 66 percent from the free throw line. Boise State is in its first year as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

Series Record: 9-7 favoring BYU. The two teams met last during the 1997-98 season with the Cougars picking up the 80-69 victory in Boise.

Scouting Univ.of Texas

Texas has played two exhibition games prior to the contest with BYU on the 20th. It will be the season home opener for the Longhorns. The 2000-01 team compiled a 20-13, 7-9 record, finishing in 7th place in the Big 12 conference. Texas returns 4 starters and 10 letterwinners from a team that went to the NCAA tournament, losing in the First Round 68-64 to St. Mary's (CA). This season's team is ranked 24th by the Women's Basketball News Service, the same publication that has BYU ranked 25th. The Longhorns finished the 2000-01 year shooting 40 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line. They also averaged 69.2 points a game.

Series Record: 0-4 in favor of the University of Texas. The series dates back to the 1994-95 season when the Longhorns defeated the Cougars 60-74 at the Marriott Center.

Head Coach Jeff Judkins

Jeff Judkins, an assistant during the 2000-01 season is this year's head coach for the Cougar women. Judkins, a longtime University of Utah coach and player takes over the BYU program with a proven record of success that dates back to his high school days at Highland High School in Salt Lake City. An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins went on to play for Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.

He played five years in the National Basketball Association for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.

After his NBA career, he returned to the the University of Utah in 1989, and was an integral part of the program's success during his 10 year tenure.

Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.

He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (20), Jordan (18), Jenna (16), Jaime (13) and Jaxson (10).

Travel Itinerary/Shoot Around

BYU will depart for Boise on Thurs., Nov. 15 at 11:12 a.m. on Delta flight #700 and will stay at the Courtyard by Marriott on 222 So. Broadway Ave., 208-331-2700. The Cougars return on Sat., Nov. 17 at 9:13 a.m. on Delta flight #207. Then they are off to Austin, Texas on Mon. Nov. 19th. BYU has a shoot around from noon to 1 p.m. on Thurs., Nov 16 at the BSU Pavilion.

Cougars Practice Schedule

BYU practices are Mon., Wed., and Fri., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Tues., and Thurs., they practice form 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. All coach and player interviews must be scheduled in advance through the women's basketball SID Norma Collett.
