First Road Loss For Judkins' Team

Austin, TX (Nov. 20, 2001) Three Cougar women scored in double digits but it still wasn't enough to hold off Texas as BYU losses its first game of the season 90-74, Tuesday.

All-American Erin Thorn led the Cougars effort with 26 points, followed by 17 points from senior guard Stacy Jensen and 13 from UCLA transfer Melanie Pearson. Jensen led the team in rebounds, grabbing six on the night.

BYU held the Longhorns to just 38 points in the first half, but they came back with a strong performance in the second half, shooting 65 percent from the field for their 52 points. Guard Alisha Sare came off the bench for the Longhorns and had a team-high 17 points.

The Cougars shot 47 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line, going there 17 times to Texas's 33.

"I thought we did some really good things early in the game, shot the ball well and defended the ball well," said head coach Jeff Judkins. "We just need to play a little smarter and a little tougher as the game progresses."

BYU was down by just two points at the break with Texas holding just an eight-point lead 60-52 with 10 minutes left in the game. The loss puts the Cougars record at 1-1 on the year while the Longhorns open their season with a 1-0 record.

The Cougars open their home season on Sat. Nov. 24 in a matchup against the Cougars of Washington State. Tip off is at 1 p.m. in the Marriott Center and is part of a double header with the men's team who play at 4 p.m.
