Cougars Record-Breaking Effort Falls Short Against SMU
Dallas, TX (Dec. 8, 2001) It was a record breaking game for the Cougars although they could not pull off the win, falling to the SMU Mustangs 92-83, Saturday.
All-American Erin Thorn became BYU's all-time leading three-point scorer with the five she made in the game en route to her team high 17 points and seven rebounds. The Cougar team set two records at Moody Coliseum, attempting a record 31 treys and a making 11 three-point field goals. Despite BYU's record-breaking effort, the team could not pull off the win in the late going of the game, losing by 9. The Cougar team out rebounded SMU 43 to 31, but did not fare as well from the free throw line, going there just 16 times to the Mustangs 35.
BYU Head Coach Jeff Judkins felt good about his team's performance. "We played good basketball today, and shot the ball well," he said. "Everybody played well and gave it all they had and that's all you can ask from your team. I know we're looking forward to returning home and playing on our own court."
Cougar freshman Danielle Cheesman came off the bench for a season and career high 16 points and four rebounds. Starters Jennifer Leitner and Stacy Jensen contributed in double-digit points as well with 13 and 12 respectively. Leitner led the team in rebounds with 10.
For SMU it was sophomore guard Andrea Cossey leading the game with 27 points 16 of those coming from the free throw line. Three other teammates also scored in double digits with Kenni Patton's 21, Jackee' Brown's 15 and Kaci Alexander's 13.
The Cougar team (4-3) returns to Provo next week to host Pac-10 foe Oregon on Wed., Dec. 12 in an early afternoon game slated for a 4 p.m. tip off.
