Gonzales named AP All-America Honorable Mention
PROVO, Utah – BYU sophomore guard Shaylee Gonzales was named a 2021-22 AP All-America Honorable Mention, the Associated Press announced Wednesday.
Gonzales is the seventh Cougar in program history to earn an honorable mention from the AP. Gonzales joins teammate Lauren Gustin who earned the recognition last season, Ambrosia Anderson (2006), Dani Kubik Wright (2007), Kristen Riley (2012), Jennifer Hamson (2014), Morgan Bailey (2015) and Lexi Eaton Rydalch (2015, 2016) as BYU women’s basketball players to receive the honor.
Gonzales, was also a second-team All-America selection by The Athletic last week.
The West Coast Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row, Gonzales averages 18.7 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals.
The Arizona product was named a finalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award and has led BYU to a 26-3 record, including a regular-season WCC championship.
Also named to the All-WCC First Team for the third year, Gonzales has scored in double figures in 28 of 29 games and topped 20 points in 13 games.
BYU earned 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play 11-seed Villanova on Saturday, March 19 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at 1 p.m. EDT.
