BYU and Gonzaga to face off in WCC Championship

LAS VEGAS – No. 1 seed BYU and No. 2 seed Gonzaga will play for the championship of the West Coast Conference Tournament Tuesday, March 8 at 1 p.m. PT at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. 

The game will be televised on ESPNU with a radio broadcast on BYU Radio Sirius XM 143 and 107.9 FM. It will also be available via BYUCougars.com/LiveRadio and the BYU Cougars App. 

BYU (26-2) will match up against Gonzaga (25-6) for the third time this year. The Cougars swept the season series against the Bulldogs with a 62-50 win in Spokane and a 63-39 victory in Provo. The game is also a rematch of last year's tournament championship game. Gonzaga won 43-42 on a last-second shot. 

This is the seventh appearance by BYU in the WCC finals, with three titles under head coach Jeff Judkins.

BYU Game Notes (26-2, 15-1)

  • WCC REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPS: BYU won its fifth regular-season conference title under Judkins with a 15-1 record in league play.
  • LAST TIME VS. GONZAGA: BYU swept the season series against the Zags with a 62-50 win in Spokane and 63-39 in Provo.
  • REMATCH: The title game against Gonzaga is a rematch of last season’s WCC finals. BYU came up short after a last-second shot by the Zags doomed the Cougars 43-42.
  • CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES: This is the Cougars’ 7th appearance in the finals. BYU won it three times (2019, 2015 and 2012).
  • WCC AWARDS: Head coach Jeff Judkins won the WCC Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive year. It was his third WCC coaching honor and sixth coach of the year award for his career. Shaylee Gonzales was named the WCC Player of the Year after earning co-player of the year honors last year. In addition to Gonzales, Paisley Harding and Lauren Gustin were also named All-WCC First Team selections while Tegan Graham was an honorable mention.
  • RANKED: BYU moved up to No. 15 on Monday in the latest AP Top 25. It is the highest ranking in school history after hitting 16 three different times earlier this year.
  • STATS: Heading into the tournament, BYU ranked No. 1  in scoring margin at +21.2 points per game, No. 7 in scoring offense at 79.2 points per game. The Cougars are No. 2 in assists per game (20.3) and No. 3 in assist to turnover ratio (1.55), No. 5 in field goal percentage (47.7) and No. 23 in field goal percentage defense (35.7).
