Gonzales named to Naismith Trophy Midseason Team
ATLANTA – BYU sophomore guard Shaylee Gonzales was named one of 30 players on the Midseason Team for the Jersey Mike’s 2021-22 Naismith Trophy for the Women’s College Player of the Year.
Gonzales leads a BYU team ranked 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 sitting at 19-2 on the year and fresh off a historic comeback to beat Gonzaga on the road to maintain control in the West Coast Conference race. Gonzales scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to close out the Cougars' victory.
BYU’s leading scorer is one of just three players from a mid-major conference to be included on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team.
The reigning WCC Co-Player of the Year, Gonzales posts 18.1 points per game in 2021-22. She also adds 5.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game, ranking among the top players in the WCC in each category.
Gonzales has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and topped 20 points in 10 games, including dropping 24 in a win over No. 17 Florida State, and 20 apiece in wins over No. 22 West Virginia and Utah.
National semifinalists for the Naismith Trophy will be announced March 8.
