Cougars face Saint Mary's and LMU in league play this week

PROVO, Utah –  After a 2-0 start to West Conference Play, No. 18 BYU continues its league play with a home game Thursday against Saint Mary's and a road contest at LMU on Saturday.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MT at the Marriott Center on Thursday with the road game at LMU set for 2 p.m. PT at the Gersten Pavilion.

BYU Game Notes (12-1, 2-0)

  • LAST GAME: BYU took both games to open conference play 2-0, getting a road win at San Francisco 76-64 and beat Pacific in the Marriott Center 94-68.
  • The Cougars stayed at No. 18 in the AP Top 25 this week. BYU is ranked for the seventh consecutive week for the first time since 2006.
  • ESPN’s Bracketology has the Cougars projected as a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament 68-team bracket.
  • As of Jan. 12, Lauren Gustin ranks No. 2 nationally in rebounds per game (12.8), Sara Hamson is No. 16 in blocked shots per game (2.54), Tegan Graham is No. 16 in 3-pointers per game (3.0), Maria Albiero is No. 19 in assist to turnover ratio (2.67) and Shaylee Gonzales is No. 38 in points per game (18.5).
  • Shaylee Gonzales was named the West Coast Conference player of the week for the second time this year. She leads the WCC in scoring at 18.5 points per game. Against Pacific she had 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

About Saint Mary's (7-5, 1-0)

  • The Gaels are coming off a quick turnaround with with a 82-63 win vs. LMU on Tuesday. 
  • Saint Mary's is 7-5 under 16th-year head coach Paul Thomas.

About LMU (5-6, 0-1)

  • The Lions lost their first conference game to Saint Mary’s and host San Diego on Thursday night before heading to Provo.
  • LMU is coached by Aarika Hughes, kicking off her first season at LMU as the head coach.
