BYU women back home for WCC games, host St. Mary’s and Pacific, Thursday and Saturday

PROVO, Utah— BYU women’s basketball is 13-9, 8-4 on the season and hosts two conference games this week. The Cougars play St. Mary’s Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. MST and battle Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. MST. Both home games will be carried live on BYUtv and on the BYUtv App.

  • BYU women’s basketball has compiled a 13-9, 8-4 record on the season; is tied with San Diego for second place in this week’s WCC standings; it is averaging 60.4 points and 39.7 rebounds a game; is 13-4 when it gets more blocks than its opponents; is 12-1 when dishing out more assists than opponents; is 12-1 when leading at the half
  • The Cougars are nationally ranked third in field goal percentage defense (32.5); fourth in blocked shots per game (6.3); sixth in blocked shots (139); 20th in scoring defense (55.3)
  • Paisley Johnson is one of two players scoring in double digits for BYU with a 14.1 average; Brenna Drollinger is tallying 11.6 points; she ranks 24th all-time in career points with 1,205; leads in assists and steals with 4.2 and 1.9 averages, respectively

  • The Cougars are holding opponents to just 55.3 points and are allowing only 37 rebounds a game
  • The series with St. Mary’s is tied at 10-10; SMC is 3-6 when playing in Provo; in this year’s first matchup between the two league foes, BYU picked up the 65-55 win in Moraga on Jan. 18; last season each team won on the road

ABOUT ST. MARY’S

  • St. Mary's has compiled an 11-13, 6-7 record on the year; the Gaels are in seventh place in this week's WCC standings; they are coming off a 70-60 upset win over No. 11 Gonzaga in Moraga, last Saturday
  • SMC’s offensive presence has four players scoring in double figures led by Sam Simons who’s is tallying 15.6 points a game; Emily Codding is next with 14.7 points a contest; she’s followed by Madeline Holland who is contributing 13.2 points; Taycee Wedin rounds out the scoring averaging 13 points a game
  • Codding leads the way in rebounds, pulling down 8.4 boards a game; Holland leads in assists with a 4.8 average; Brianna Simonich tops the list in steals with a 1.4 average
  • St. Mary’s is averaging 70.5 points and pulls down 38.7 rebounds a contest
  • The Gaels were picked to finish fourth in this year’s WCC race; Simons was named to the 10-member 2019-20 Preseason All WCC team
  • Head coach Paul Thomas is in his 14th season at the helm of the women’s basketball program at St. Mary’s where he has compiled a 267-173 record

ABOUT PACIFIC

  • Pacific has a 14-10, 7-6 record so far this season; the Tigers are in a three-way tie for third place with Portland and Pepperdine in the latest WCC standings; they travel to San Diego Thursday for a matchup against the Toreros
  • Valerie Higgins is one of two players on the team that puts up double-digit points with a 16.7 average; Brooklyn McDavid is next tallying 15 points a game; Higgins also leads in rebounds (9.3), assists (3.8), steals (4.0) and blocks (0.88)
  • Pacific was picked to finish third in this year’s WCC race; Higgins was named to the 10-member 2019-20 Preseason All WCC team
  • In the series with the Tigers, the Cougars have a 14-4 advantage; Pacific has a 2-6 record when playing in Provo, last winning on Jan. 2, 2014, a 75-62 Tiger victory; in the first meeting this year, BYU recorded a 76-66 overtime win in Stockton on Jan. 16, 2020
  • Bradley Davis is in his fifth season as Pacific’s head coach where he has compiled a 71-78 overall record
