BYU falls 65-33 to No. 4 Oregon State in Maui Jim Maui Classic

MAUI, Hawaii – The BYU women’s basketball team fell 65-33 to No. 4 Oregon State in the final game of the Maui Jim Maui Classic, Thursday night in the Lahaina Civic Center.

“We came out and defended really well for about the first 15 minutes of the game," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "We just couldn’t score. And they have size and really good scorers. We felt that we were in it for the first half and that’s a positive for us. This is a top-10 team so hopefully, this will help us prepare for our conference race."

Brenna Chase Drollinger led the Cougars offensively with 14 points. On the defensive end of the ball, Jasmine Moody led all players with 10 rebounds and Sara Hamson led all players with four blocks.

Hamson came out big with three blocks in the first five minutes of the first quarter. A 6-0 run with baskets from Paisley Johnson and Moody extended the BYU lead to 8-2. A trey from Drollinger closed out the period 11-4 for the Cougars, becoming the first team this season to hold Oregon State to single digits in the first quarter.

With 3:23 left in the half, the Beavers took the lead for the first time in the game, but a jumper from Drollinger quickly brought it back to a tie at 17-17. Oregon State went on an 11-0 run late in the period,  heading into the break with a 28-17 advantage.

A jumper from Johnson ended the scoring drought for the Cougars in the second minute of the third quarter, but the Beavers managed to pull ahead throughout the quarter. 3-pointers from Drollinger and Albiero decreased the deficit, but the quarter finished with BYU down 15 points, 45-30.

Solid shooting from beyond the arc resulted in the Beavers extending their lead in the fourth quarter with a 17-0 run. 

The Cougars open up West Coast Conference play on the road against Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. PST. A live video stream of the game will be available on the WCC Network.

Team

  • The Cougars shot 25 percent from the field, 50 percent from the free-throw line and went 1 of 6 from behind the arc in the first half of action. They would finish the contest shooting 21 percent from the field, 18 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the charity stripe.
  • In the first half of play, each team had four blocks. For the game, the Beavers finished with seven blocks to BYU’s four.
  • Oregon State finished the game with the advantage in assists with 12 compared with just five assists for the Cougars.
  • In the rebounds category, the Beavers grabbed a total of 22 rebounds in the first half while the Cougars had pulled down 19. At the end of the game, Oregon State had 40 rebounds while BYU had pulled down 35.
  • BYU recorded four steals in the game to Oregon State’s one.

Player

  • Brenna Drollinger led the Cougar effort in the first half with seven points, one rebound and one assist. She picked up her seventh game scoring in double figures with a team-best 14 points on 6 of 15 shooting from the field.  Drollinger also pulled down two rebounds, dished out one assist and got one steal.
  • Drollinger was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Maui Jim Maui Classic.
  • Paisley Johnson finished the game with six points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
  • Jasmine Moody came off the bench pulling down a team-best 10 rebounds. She also scored four points, going 4 of 6 from the charity stripe.
  • Sara Hamson led the way in blocks with a game-high four. She also grabbed four rebounds.
  • Maria Albiero scored eight points along with one rebound and one assist.
