In final WCC game, Cougar women host Santa Clara Saturday
PROVO, Utah — With a (22-6, 14-3) record, BYU women’s basketball plays its final WCC game of the 2019 season Saturday. The Cougars host Santa Clara (13-15, 6-11) at 2 p.m. MST. The game vs. the Broncos is slated to air live on BYUtv. The two seniors on the team will be recognized at the conclusion of the game.
ABOUT BYU
- After the 82-59 home victory over San Francisco, the Cougars extended their win streak to five games where they sit in second place in the league standings. When playing at home, BYU has a 7-1 record in conference contests.
- With the win over USF on Thursday night, BYU improved its record to 16-1 when leading at the half; 20-3 when making at least 5 treys; 13-2 when dishing out more assists; and 13-1 when it pulls down more rebounds than its opponents.
- Freshman Shaylee Gonzales, who has scored in double-digits in 26 games, leads the team in scoring and assists with 16.4 and 4.2 averages, respectively. Sophomore Paisley Johnson contributes 14.4 points while junior Brenna Chase puts up 12.6 points a contest. Chase leads in steals (2.4 spg). Sophomore center Sara Hamson leads the team in rebounding (5.7) and blocks (2.4). Senior forward Jasmine Moody ranks second in rebounding, averaging 5.6 boards a game.
- The Cougars are averaging 68.8 points and 38 rebounds a game. They are holding opponents to just 62.5 points per contest. BYU is shooting 42.7 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from behind the arc and 69.8 percent from the free-throw line.
- In the first meeting with the Broncos this season on Dec. 29, the Cougars picked up the 54-44 victory in Santa Clara. BYU leads the overall series 16-2. Santa Clara has never won a game in the Marriott Center in the series history.
ABOUT SANTA CLARA
- The Broncos have a 13-15, 6-11 record on the year and sit in seventh place in the league standings. Santa Clara recorded league wins over San Diego, San Francisco, LMU and Pacific. They swept the series with Portland. All but one of those wins occurred on the road
- The Broncos have two players scoring in double digits with Tia Hay tallying a team-best 15.2 points a game. Ashlyn Herlihy follows with 11.1 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game. Hay also leads the way in assists and in steals with 4.3 and 2.0 averages, respectively.
- SCU is averaging 64.3 points and 34.5 rebounds a contest. The Broncos shoot 41.2 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from behind the arc and 72.6 percent from the charity stripe.
UP NEXT FOR BYU
After Saturday’s game, the Cougar women will prepare to compete in the 2019 UCU WCC Women’s Basketball Championships from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The winner of the championships gets an automatic bid into the 2019 NCAA Championships.
