Two standout high school girls basketball players sign to play college ball at BYU

PROVO, Utah — BYU women’s basketball head coach Jeff Judkins announced that Leilani Otuafi and Kyra Beckman have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Cougars.

“We’re very excited and lucky to get these two really good players," Judkins said. “They will help our program to stay competitive and successful in the future.”

Otuafi is a 5-foot-9 guard from Fallon, Nevada, who preps at Churchill County High School. Heading into her senior campaign, Otuafi averages 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.4 steals per game. In 2016, she was named MVP in the state’s Northern League and was an All-State First Team honoree. In 2017, she garnered Honorable Mention All-State and in 2018 made the Las Vegas Review Journal’s All-State Team.

“Leilani is a very athletic player and a good defender. She’s a complete player who brings toughness and can shoot the ball well both inside and outside. She’ll play the number two and three spots for us.”

Beckman is a 6-foot-1 forward who hails from Snohomish, Wash., and Snohomish High School. Last season her team won the Wesco 3A state title and she was named the Wesco 3A Player of the Year. In 2018, Beckman was named to the Everett Herald’s All-Area First Team. At the end of her junior season, she averaged 14.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
