In a tie for first place in the WCC, BYU women host Pacific Saturday

PROVO, Utah— After Thursday’s road win at Pepperdine, BYU women’s basketball (11-7, 5-2) is now tied with Gonzaga for first place in the latest West Coast Conference standings.

This Saturday, January 21, the Cougars host Pacific (8-10, 4-3) in a 2 p.m. MT tip. The contest between the Cougars and Tigers will be carried live on BYUtv and simulcast on BYU Radio.

Currently, BYU has three players scoring in double digits. Junior guard Cassie Broadhead, who leads the WCC in scoring, is averaging a team-best 18.1 points and 4.2 rebounds a game. Senior guard Makenzi Pulsipher contributes 13.2 points and 3.8 boards to the Cougars’ offensive threat. Senior All-American Kalani Purcell rounds out the scoring output for BYU with a double-double 12.6 points and a team- and league-high 10.1 boards per game.

After seven conference games played, the Cougars are scoring 66.6 points per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 35.0 percent from behind the arc and 70.2 percent from the free-throw line. The team also grabs 36.3 rebounds a contest.

In conference only stats, BYU leads in scoring margin, field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage and is tied with Gonzaga in assists.

Pacific (8-10, 4-3) is in a four-way tie for second place in the most updated WCC standings with Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s and San Francisco.

Saturday’s game in Provo will be the second meeting between the two teams. In Stockton on January 7, the Cougars picked up a 68-55 road win. The Tigers lost to Saint Mary’s Thursday night, 63-54 in Stockton.

Pacific has three players scoring in double figures, led by 13.3 points from GeAnna Luaulu-Summers with Desire Finnie contributing 12.6 points and Chelsea Lidy chipping in 10.1 points per game. In the rebounds category, Emily Simons tops the list pulling down 6.0 boards a contest.

The Tigers are scoring 73.9 points per game while shooting 42.3 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from behind the arc and 78.1 percent from the free-throw line. Pacific grabs 35.1 rebounds a game.

THE SERIES
BYU leads the overall series against Pacific 11-3. When playing in Provo, Pacific has a 2-4 record. The last time that the Tigers won at the Marriott Center was on January 2, 2014. In that game, Pacific beat BYU 75-62. Head coach Jeff Judkins has a 6-2 record over the Tigers.

The two conference foes played their first game in Stockton on January 7. In that game, BYU picked up the 68-55 road win behind double digit scoring from Cassie Broadhead (20) and a double-double from Kalani Purcell, game-high 13 rebounds and 16 points. The Cougars shot 50 percent from the field, 81.8 percent from the free-throw line and 53.8 percent from 3-point range.
