Women’s hoops to play four games in Spain
BYU women’s basketball starts its 2014-15 season early this year with a four-game 10-day road trip through Spain August 15-26. The team is in its second week of practices in preparation for the trip.
While in Spain, the team will play a game in Madrid, two in Bilbao and one in Barcelona. The contests include a matchup against one of Spain’s national teams, and a couple of games versus very good club teams.
“This is going to be a great opportunity for our team to get some early practices and playing time especially for our new incoming freshmen,” said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins.
“The trip will give our team a chance to see a great country, learn about its culture and people and give us time to build our team unity and chemistry as we prepare for another successful year,” noted coach Judkins.
This is the fifth foreign tour by the women’s basketball team and the second time it has competed in Spain. In the summer of 2000, that year’s squad competed in games in Italy, Spain, Croatia and Switzerland. In the spring of 2010, the Cougar team traveled to Italy and Switzerland.
All 17 members of the upcoming 2014-15 squad will have an opportunity to play in the scheduled games while in Spain.
Under NCAA rules, teams are allowed a foreign tour once every four years with an additional 10 days of practice time.
BYU concluded the 2013-14 campaign with a Sweet 16 finish in the NCAA tournament, a No. 18 final Coaches’ Poll ranking, the most wins in program history (28) and a second place regular season finish in the West Coast Conference.
