Nonconference 2014-15 women’s basketball schedule announced
Eight teams that participated in postseason play, four opponents from the Mountain West Conference and two Pac-12 schools are all part of the 2014-15 tough BYU women’s basketball nonconference schedule announced by head coach Jeff Judkins.
“We are going to be playing a lot of hard games on the road this year,” Judkins said. “I think we have a great balance of in-state games as well as teams from very tough conference in the Pac-12 and MWC.”
The Cougars open up the 2014-15 campaign on the road at South Dakota State on Nov. 14, a team that advanced to the semifinals oflast year's postseason WNIT.
The Cougars are slated to play just five home games including the home opener on Nov. 19 vs. CS Northridge. The Matadors competed in last year's NCAA tournament. Three days later, BYU will play the only other contest at the Marriott Center in November when it hosts MWC foe Nevada on the 22nd.
During the week of Thanksgiving, the Cougars return to BYU-Hawai’i to host the Tom Westin Invitational. While in Laie, the team will play Butler, BYU-H and Oregon State.
Two former MWC schools, UNLV and Colorado State will return to Utah to play the Cougars. The Rebels will play on Dec. 4 in the Smith Fieldhouse and the Rams will battle BYU on Dec. 6 at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City.
“Our schedule will provide a couple of different situations for our team, playing at the Smith Fieldhouse and at Energy Solutions Arena. We feel that this schedule is very competitive for us and it will help with our RPI when it comes to postseason play,” Judkins added.
BYU’s final nonconference game at home is on Dec. 9 when it hosts Weber State.
The Cougars close out the month of December playing two more in-state rivals on the road, playing at Utah on Dec. 13 and at Utah State on Dec. 22.
In early November, BYU hosts two exhibition games vs. Westminster on Nov. 1 and Ft. Lewis College on Nov. 7.
The West Coast Conference schedule will be announced at a later time. Gonzaga, San Diego and St. Mary's all competed in postseason action last year. The Bulldogs played in the first round of the NCAA tournament while the Toreros and Gaels participated in the WNIT.
