Hamson garners league’s top two major awards

Hamson named WCC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Eaton and Hamson First Team, Beeston and Bailey Honorable Mention 

SAN BRUNO, Calif. –  The West Coast Conference announced its 2013-14 league awards today with BYU’s Jennifer Hamson receiving both the Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year awards.

After ranking among active career top-25 national leaders in three categories for the bulk of the season, Hamson became the first student-athlete in league history to earn Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in the same season.  All of the awards were voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Hamson was joined by teammate Lexi Eaton on the WCC Women’s Basketball First Team. Kim Beeston and Morgan Bailey were 2013-14 WCC Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention selections.

Hamson ranked second in the league in scoring (18.5), rebounds (12.1) during WCC contests and was the overall league leader in field goal percentage (56.6) and blocked shots (4.2). The two-sport star led the nation in blocked shots (122) and blocks per game and was second in the WCC in double-double nights (19).

A three-time WCC Player of the Week, Hamson averaged a league-best 4.3 blocks during WCC games and pulled down 8.1 defensive boards. The senior spearheaded a BYU defensive unit that ranked No. 15 among Division I leaders in field goal percentage defense (35.1) and sixth in blocked shots (6.3).

In Hamson’s career, she has tallied 66 games scoring in double figures, with 20of those above the 20-point mark and she’s tallied 29 double-doubles. She joined BYU’s 1,000-point club earlier this year and is in 15th place all-time with 1,343 points.  She currently sits second only to her mother, Tresa Spaulding Hamson, in career blocks (315) and third in rebounds (892).

Eaton ranks third in 3-point field goal percentage, fourth in the WCC in scoring, sixth in free throw percentage and 12^th in 3-point field goals made.

In the WCC, Beeston ranks first in 3-point field goals made, second in 3-point field goal percentage, third in assist/turnover ratio,  fifth in assists and 20^th in scoring.

Bailey ranks fourth in rebounding, seventh in defensive rebounds, 10th in field goal percentage, and 29^th in scoring.
