Eight Hoopsters garner academic accolades

Eight BYU women’s basketball players have been recognized for their academic accomplishments by the West Coast Conference in its annual WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the 2012-13 season. Six of the honorees were repeat winners.

Sophomores Ashley Garfield and Kylie Brown led the BYU women’s basketball team with the two highest GPA’s on the team at 3.96 receiving Gold Honors (4.00-3.75). Garfield is majoring in PE teaching and coaching while Brown lists pre-management as her area of study. This is the second straight year that the two have received the academic recognition.

Garnering Silver Honors (3.74-3.50) were Kim Parker Beeston with a 3.66 GPA in school health education, Brooke Romney with a 3.61 GPA in an open major and Jennifer Hamson with a 3.57 GPA in exercise science. Beeston and Hamson are repeat honorees.

Three other players picked up Bronze Honors (3.49-3.00). Freshman Kylie Maeda concluded her first college season with a 3.47 GPA in pre-management. Graduate student Haley Steed and sophomore Xojian Harry round out the academic honors for the women’s basketball team with 3.24 GPA’s. Steed studied exercise and wellness while Harry lists exercise science as her major. The award is the second for Steed and Harry.

To be named to the WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll student-athletes must have earned a varsity letter in a sport where the WCC crowned a champion during 2012-13, maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher and completed an average of 12 graded credit hours per term. The honor roll recipients are split into three categories based on GPA. Gold honors go to students who earned a 3.75 or higher. Silver honors were awarded to student-athletes with GPAs between 3.74 and 3.5 and bronze honors went to student-athletes with GPAs between 3.49 and 3.00.
