Auditions - Mon. April 29th, 2019

Auditions for the Cougarettes will be held Monday, April 29th. Auditions are open to incoming freshman, transfer students, and current BYU students. Auditioners will be taught the material that they will audition with as well as demonstrate a turn combination that they have prepared for the audition. 

*PLEASE NOTE: Online Application - YOU MUST REGISTER BY 9PM ON FRIDAY APRIL 19TH!!  LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

You MUST have been accepted to BYU in order to audition and to be considered for the team - prior to the Audition date (NO exceptions).

This year's Cougarette Auditions will take place at 177 RB on the BYU Campus from 7am-7pm. (For directions please visit map.byu.edu to view a campus map.)

Registration will begin in the main hallway of the Richards Bldg @ 7:00am Candidates must also provide proof of a recent physical. You MUST provide proof of a current physical exam within the past 3 months at the audition. Please download the necessary form below to be completed by your physician.

Please wear modest dance attire (no bare midriffs) with a comfortable jazz shoe or other appropriate footwear. Please fillout the Online Application.You MUST provide us with 2 references including phone numbers of individuals who have trained or worked with you in a dance team capacity(Mailed letters must be in our office by 4pm Friday, the day before auditions). There will be a $40 cash ONLY audition fee.

*Please arrive before 7:30am in order to complete the Registration portion of the Audition.  If you arrive late you may miss the warm-up and introduction.

**PLAN ON BRINGING LUNCH AND A WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU.  Those who make it through 1st and 2nd cuts will have short break for lunch. 

WHAT TO EXPECT

Cougarette auditions run like a master class. You will be asked to go across the floor with several combinations where judges will be assessing your technique and abilities. Across the floor combinations will include but are not limited to: kicks, leaps (switch, grande' jetes, back, side, and tilt), and turns (you must be able to do a solid quad pirouette).

If you are selected from this first part of the audition, you will be asked to stay and learn other dance combinations. Combinations will incorporate lyrical/contemporary/jazz and hip hop.

The field will be narrowed down and the group of finalists will be asked to SHOWCASE A 1 (one) Minute routine to music that wil be provided on this site and stay for an Interview (In appropriate Interview attire)  We are looking for advanced/elite level technique, ability, stage presence, professionalism and someone who captures the Cougarette style.

  • We will not discuss judges decisions following Auditions.

Scholarship money will go to team members only.  Scholarships are based upon Seniority and Leadership.  Each member of the Cougarettes will receive some financial assistance. 

**The Cougarettes are an Elite Competitive Dance Team.  Auditioners should keep this in mind as they audition for a spot on this team. Those selected for the team are not guaranteed spots in Nationals routines.  Those will be determined through skill proficiency and an audition. 

Each Dancer who makes it to the final round of Auditions will be required to SHOWCASE a Solo/Turn Routine choreographed to music that will be provided on YouTube.

Each Dancer who makes it to the final round of Auditions will be required to present an Advanced level turn combination of no less than 4 sets of 8 including Fouette Turns, ala seconde, other various advanced level turns to generic Music.  Demonstrating Difficulty, Control AND Consistency.

You will also be required to demonstrate flexibility through sitting in a flat split position, needle scale/panche's, leg hold turns, leg tilt, and tumbling skills.  **PLEASE DO NOT incorporate these skills into your turn combination.   

***Each candidate desiring a position on the 2018-19 team MUST be able to do BOTH a Right and a Left Side Aerial Cartwheel as well as a front Head Spring to a standing position and a Kip up from the floor.

We must have your recommendations in our office by 4pm Friday, the day before auditions!  Letters may be mailed: BYU Cougarette Auditions, c/o Jodi Maxfield, 269 RB, Provo, UT  84602, or Emailed to jodi_maxfield@byu.edu   *Recommendations MUST be from those who have worked with you in a Dance capacity.
