Cougarettes claim two titles at 2015 NDA Collegiate National Championship
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The BYU Cougarettes captured two national titles at the the 2015 National Dance Alliance Collegiate Championships in Dance Open Division IA and Hip Hop Division IA. The NDA Championships were held April 8-11 in Daytona Beach.
The Cougarettes, who have now won three-straight Open Division IA titles, captured the 2015 crown with a score of 9.898 to finish ahead of Missouri (9.689), Purdue (9.664), UMass (9.644) and West Virginia (9.637).
In the Hip Hop Division IA competition, the Cougarettes won their fourth title in five years with a score of 9.853, 0.25 points ahead of second-place Louisville (9.603). South Carolina (9.433), Texas Tech (9.253) and UConn (9.245) rounded out the top five.
"I was very proud of the way we performed. There’s a lot of pressure when you are defending a national title,” said Cougarettes coach Jodi Maxfield. “The routines were the most difficult we’ve ever attempted. The tricks were extremely challenging. Our goal was to win two national titles and that doesn’t happen without a lot of hard work in practice and rehearsal."
“It was awesome to see how well their performance was received by the audience and the judges,” said Maxfield. “To receive a standing ovation for both performances was very special. That doesn’t happen very often. I was very proud of them. They were almost perfect with both routines.”
The Cougarettes have won three NDA Dance Open Division IA championships (2013, 2014, 2015), four NDA Hip Hop Division IA championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015) and eight NDA Team Performance Division IA championships (1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010). They were also United Spirit Association National Champions in 2005 and 2006.
