BYU men's team wins back-to-back MPSF championship, women's team takes third

LOS ANGELES — BYU’s swim and dive teams wrapped up competition at the MPSF Championships on Saturday, with the men’s team taking first place for the second year in a row and the women’s team taking third overall.

Javier Nicolas Matta started off finals with a win for the Cougars in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 43.65. Connor Stirling and Roger Woods followed in third and fourth, with times of 43.83 and 43.85 respectively.

Brad Prolo took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:44.20, and Abe Barragan took third in the event with a 1:47.36. Emerson Edwards took fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:58.78. A team of Brigham Harrison, Woods, Matta and Stirling finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard free relay, swimming the race in 2:53.70.

Brynn Sproul earned her third first-place finish of the championship meet, winning the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:55.47. Abi Furqueron took fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:16.84 before a team of Sproul, Katie McBratney, Rachel Oyler and Halli Williams placed third in the 400-yard free relay with a 3:24.88.

The divers had several top-five finals finishes on Saturday. Kennedy Cribbs took second in the women’s platform dive event with a score of 276.15, while Brooklyn Larson took fourth with a 214.20 and Hailey Johnson took fifth with a 202.55. In the men’s event, Mickey Strauss took second with a score of 307.20, while Cody Dreesen placed fourth with 297.05 and Nathan Marshall took fifth with a 279.50.

The men’s team finished the meet in first overall with a team score of 804, taking their second MPSF Championship title in a row and earning the win by over 100 points. The women finished in third place with 584 points, falling behind UC San Diego and Hawaii.

BYU's next meet will be the Texas Last Chance meet from March 3-5. More information will be available shortly.
