Cougars compete in day three of MPSF Championship, men's team stands in first
LOS ANGELES — BYU’s swim and dive teams continued competition in California on day three of the MPSF Championships, with the men finishing the day in first place and the women standing in third.
Javier Nicolas Matta earned the Cougars a win in the 100-yard butterfly, beating a school record with a 46.59. Brad Prolo followed with a third place finish in the race, swimming a 47.21. Tanner Nelson took first in the 400-yard IM with a 3:44.99 and Tama Tuitama followed in fourth, recording a time of 3:52.23. Josue Dominguez won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 52.83. A team of Diego Camacho, Dominguez, Matta and Connor Stirling then won the 400-yard medley relay with a 3:09.57.
Brynn Sproul earned another win for the Cougars in the women’s 100-yard backstroke, swimming the race in 53.47.
Summer Murphy and Addie Richards took fourth and fifth in the women’s 400-yard IM, recording times of 4:23.14 and 4:25.06 respectively. Abi Furqueron took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.98. A team of Sproul, Furqueron, Ashley Catchpole and Rachel Oyler took fourth in the 400-yard medley relay with a 3:44.21 to finish the night.
Mickey Strauss took second place in the men’s 3m dive, recording a 363.80, while Eric Muir placed fourth with a 305.30. Kennedy Cribbs took second in the women’s 1m dive with a score of 323.60, just .05 points behind first place.
The men’s team finished day three in first place, with 502 team points. The women stand in third place overall at the conclusion of Friday’s events, with 386 points.
The meet will resume for the final day of competition on Saturday, Feb. 19. Preliminary rounds will begin at 10 a.m. PST, and finals will begin at 5 p.m. PST.
