Cougars rack up first-place finishes against Dixie State at home

BYU swimmers compete against Dixie State

PROVO, Utah — BYU women's swim and dive teams faced Dixie State for the Cougars' first home meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday. 

While the women competed against Dixie State, BYU men’s team held an intrasquad competition, as the Trailblazers do not have a men’s swim team.

The Cougars came out strong, securing multiple first-place finishes throughout the meet.

"It was a fun meet," said interim head coach Shari Skabelund. "We had some incredible swims."

BYU opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, with a team of Brynn Sproul, Chloe Freeman, Abi Furqueron and Halli Williams recording a time of 3:56.63.

Sproul continued to have a successful meet, taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.21) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.37).

Freeman earned another first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.27, while Williams secured a win in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.68.

Regan Geldmacher took first in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:28.82, and Summer Murphy won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:11.11. Rivers Johnson added another win for the Cougars, earning first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58:49.

The meet featured exhibition performances from Cougars in several different events, including diving. 

Brooklyn Larson recorded a 265.20 for her 1-meter dive, giving her the top score in that event. Kennedy Cribbs earned the top score in the 3-meter dive with a 331.85.

Geldmacher recorded the top time in the 500-yard freestyle with her exhibition time of 5:09.53, and Furqueron’s exhibition time of 1:06.14 gave her the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke. A team of Sproul, Murphy, Williams, and Emma Colvin swam an exhibition in the 200-yard freestyle relay, recording the event’s top time of 1:38.53.

BYU's next meet will be against UNLV on Friday, Nov. 5. The meet will take place in Las Vegas at the Buchanan Natatorium. Swim events will begin at 5 p.m. PDT, and diving will begin at 8 p.m. PDT.
