BYU picks up several victories at Intermountain Shootout Invitational

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – BYU racked up 10 first-place finishes on the first day of the Intermountain Shootout at El Pomar Natatorium on Friday night to propel them into day two of competition.

"So grateful that the athletes get to compete," said BYU interim head coach Shari Skabelund. "So many amazing swims from both men and women."

Freshman Tanner Nelson had a standout night, breaking records and earning two first-place finishes. Nelson won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:53.59 before breaking school and pool records in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:12.83.

Josue Dominguez also had two victories, winning the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 50.63 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 53.80. BYU secured the top-five spots in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke, with Brad Prolo, Tony Puertas, Evan VanderSluis and Emerson Edwards following Dominguez to take the second through fifth places respectively.

The Cougars took the top two spots in the men’s 400-yard relay. BYU’s relay team consisting of Dominguez, Prolo, Diego Camacho and Connor Stirling took first place with a time of 3:19.13, while the team consisting of Puertas, VanderSluis, Tama Tuitama and Roger Woods took second with a time of 3:23.85.

The women’s team brought home multiple first place finishes for the Cougars on Friday. Brynn Sproul won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.29, while Summer Murphy swam 58:46 to win the 100-yard individual medley. Freshman Regan Geldmacher took home a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, recording a 10:21.05 race.

The dive team took first in both of Friday’s dive events. Kennedy Cribbs scored a 301.15 in the women’s three-meter event, while Mickey Strauss earned a 305.25 in the men’s one-meter dive.
