Cougarettes win national titles in Jazz and Hip Hop

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — The BYU Cougarettes wrapped up three days of competition at the 2019 NDA Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship by winning Division 1A national titles in both the Jazz and Hip Hop competitions. The NDA Championships were held April 4-6 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Cougarettes, who have now won 19 national championships since 1997, captured the 2019 Jazz crown on Friday with a score of 99.00 to finish ahead of Texas Tech (97.60), South Carolina-Columbia (95.37), Iowa State (95.14) and Ohio State (94.94). The 99.00 team score is BYU's highest total ever in the Jazz competition.

BYU followed up its Jazz championship on Friday with a score of 97.23 to win the Hip Hop title on Saturday. The Cougars edged Louisville (96.32), followed by Florida International (95.51), Boise State (93.86) and Florida State (93.03).

"I was very proud of the way we performed," Cougarettes coach Jodi Maxfield said. "We fought hard on stage for both titles with a lot of commitment, unity and love. I'm so proud of all the hard work we put in this year to achieve the goal of winning two national titles."

The Cougarettes have won five NDA Open Division/Jazz IA championships (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019), six NDA Hip Hop Division IA championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019) and eight NDA Team Performance Division IA championships (1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010). They were also United Spirit Association National Champions in 2005 and 2006.
