Philbrick earns UPAA Photographer of the Year
PROVO, Utah—BYU photographer Mark Philbrick, who captures and directs much of the photo content on byucougars.com, was named the 2012 National Photographer of the Year.
The title was awarded by the University Photographers Association of America during the organization’s 51st symposium. With the 2012 title, Philbrick has earned seven photographer of the year awards, more than any other photographer in UPAA history.
Philbrick—who takes photos for all departments at BYU, including athletics—also won the Best of Show award with images from his photo shoot with the gymnastics team. He took first place in the features and illustrations category, second place in sports features and illustrations and received an honorable mention in features and illustrations.
Photo manager Jaren Wilkey, who also provides many images for byucougars.com, took second place in the sports action category with his image of Katy Andrews tumbling over a barrier during a steeplechase race and plunging into the water behind it. He also took second place in the features and illustrations category and third place in the news features category.
In the multimedia category, the BYU Photo office took second for its music video “BYU Mathlete.”
