MWC Announces 157 Cougars Named Academic All-Conference
PROVO, Utah (June 27, 2011)—After a great season for BYU both athletically and in the classroom, the Mountain West Conference announced Monday that 157 BYU student-athletes have earned Academic All-Conference awards for spring 2011.
The 782 MWC athletes who received the award earned a grade point average of at least 3.0 and made significant contributions to their teams. Athletes were selected from 12 winter and spring sports.
Track and field boasted the greatest number of awards for the Cougars, with 84 men and women athletes receiving the honor. The swimming and diving team had 36 athletes on the awards list. Baseball came in third with 10 players and softball had six. Five athletes from both the women’s basketball team and the women’s tennis team earned the award. Men’s basketball and men’s golf each had three, while women’s golf had two and men’s tennis had one.
BYU earned the most awards in the conference for spring 2011. New Mexico came in second with 99 awards, Utah third with 89 and Colorado State in fourth with 75.
During the 2010-11 academic year (fall and spring), BYU had a total of 235 student-athletes garner Academic All-Conference awards in 17 sports.
