Deseret First Duel Cup Golf Tournament Announced

PROVO -- BYU and Utah will kickoff the 2010-2011 Deseret First Duel Rivalry Series with the Third Annual Deseret First Duel Cup Golf Tournament on Aug. 11 at the widely acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, Red Ledges in Heber, Utah. Athletic department officials and fans will face off for initial bragging rights for the upcoming 2010-11 season.

The format for the Rivalry Cup will be a Ryder Cup, best-ball match play event. Teams will consist of two Cougars competing against two Utes. BYU has won the last two Rivalry Cup match ups, with Utah capturing the 2007 cup.

“The BYU-Utah rivalry is one of the nation's great rivalries,” BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said. “This is a great opportunity for fans to be an active participant in the rivalry and represent their colors. We invite Cougar fans to come out and help us start the new season with a win over Utah.”

"As we just opened our second season, we are thrilled to bring both universities to Red Ledges to compete in this legendary Duel Cup event," said Todd Cates, Red Ledges vice president and project manager. "As a course that has recently received tremendous recognition as the Best New Private Course by Golf Magazine and the Best Golf Course by the Best of State organization in Utah, we are honored to host the outstanding athletic departments of two of our state's leading institutions."

Deseret First Credit Union sponsors the Deseret First Duel Cup. The credit union has assembled a number of hole sponsors for this golf tournament as well for a fun, competitive atmosphere.

Registration can be done individually, or with friends in pairs or as a foursome. Each player receives:

- Official BYU or Utah team golf shirt

- Breakfast & lunch

- Tee package & prizes

- Green fees & cart rental

- 7 a.m. registration & 8 a.m. shotgun start

About the Deseret First Duel

Each year BYU and Utah compete on the field, court, mat and in the pool for the Deseret First Duel Championship. The Cougars and Utes compete in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, women's volleyball and men's and women's swimming and earn points for each victory. The school with the most points at the end of the season is awarded the championship trophy. Team trophies are also presented to the winner in each sport.

BYU leads the 2009-10 Deseret First Duel with an impressive 44 to 15.5 score over Utah. The two schools split the first two years, with BYU capturing the inaugural event and Utah winning the duel last season.
