PROVO -- Brigham Young University athletes, coaches, alumni and Cougar Club members gathered for the seventh annual Y Awards on Wednesday evening, paying tribute to the top student-athletes, coaches and volunteers for their efforts on and off the field.

The ceremony will be televised nationally on BYUTV on May 5 at 8 p.m., May 12 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and other dates to be announced at a later time.

During the 2009-10 sports season BYU teams won seven Mountain West Conference titles, while Cougar student-athletes earned 142 All-MWC citations. In addition, five athletes were named MWC Athlete of the Year and five coaches were named MWC Coach of the Year. A total of 223 BYU student-athletes were named to the MWC All-Academic team.

BYU Athletics also enjoyed success on a national level, with 31 student-athletes earning All-American honors, and four earning CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition.

In addition to honoring the various national and conference award winners, BYU Athletics presented a variety of Y Awards as well. Candidates for each award were nominated by student-athletes, coaches and administrators. The winner was then selected from among three finalists by a vote of their peers.

The Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to basketball star Jimmer Fredette, who led the MWC in scoring and three-point percentage. Fredette was the USBWA District VIII Player of the Year and named All-America by several organizations. The Male Athlete of the Year is given to the athlete who demonstrates the competitive spirit of desire, dedication, and determination, leading them to the top of competition and serving as an inspiration to both teammates and fans. “I’d just like to thank everybody for voting for me,” Fredette said. “I’m glad to see a lot of athletes here tonight and for all the support I’ve received. Thank you again for this award. I just want to offer congratulations to everyone tonight.”

The BYU softball team was named Women’s Team of the Year after making the NCAA Regional for the fifth year in a row in 2009.

Cecily Lemmon-Lew (cross country) and Jessica Purcell-Fitu (softball) were the other finalists for the award.

Lacey Cramer was the first BYU freshman to become an individual national champion by winning the 800-meter race, a feat that earned her the Female Rookie of the Year award. Cramer earned three All-American awards and finished first in the MWC indoor and outdoor 800-meter races.

The play of the year was credited to the BYU football team with their overtime victory overall rival Utah. BYU senior quarterback Max Hall responded to Utah’s field goal by connecting with senior tight end Andrew George for a 25-yard touchdown strike to give the Cougars their 26-23 victory in front of a sold-out crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

“There are some amazing plays that were up for this award,” George said. “These kinds of plays don’t happen by chance. We work for these in the off-season to be able to execute at the right moment so I know a lot of work goes into them. To me, this is a team award. Without the rest of the guys doing their job it wouldn’t happen. “
