Conference-High 67 Cougars Named Academic All-MWC
PROVO -- Normally known for their brawn, BYU student-athletes were recognized Thursday for their academic success as a total of 67 Cougars were named to the Fall 2009 Academic All-Mountain West Conference team.
“Our student-athletes had another very successful fall semester,” said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. “We are pleased with their achievements on the playing field and in the classroom. Both endeavors are equally important to us at BYU and demonstrate the quality of our student-athletes.”
A total of 384 student-athletes conference-wide were named Academic All-MWC. BYU placed more student-athletes on the team than any other MWC school, followed by New Mexico (50), Air Force (44), Utah (44), Wyoming (41), UNLV (39), TCU (36), Colorado State (35) and San Diego State (28).
The BYU football team had the most players appear on the Academic list with 32 students followed by women’s soccer with 14 selections. Women’s cross country had nine honorees while men’s cross country placed eight. Four women’s volleyball players were also honored.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
