135 Cougars Named MWC Scholar Athletes

COLORADO SPRINGS -- A total of 535 student-athletes were named Mountain West Conference Scholar Athletes for 2005-06. BYU led the way with 135 student-athletes honored, followed by New Mexico (80), Utah (54) and Wyoming (54), TCU (53), Air Force (52), Colorado State (44), UNLV (35) and San Diego State (28).

To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and have participated in varsity competition for their athletic team.

BYU's women's track and field team led the way with 28 Scholar Athletes while the football had 20 selections and the men's track and field team has 18. Women's cross country came in next with 15 honorees followed by women's swimming and diving (10), women's soccer (8), men's swimming and diving (7), baseball (5), women's basketball (5), women's volleyball (5) and men's volleyball (5). The women's golf, men's golf and gymnastics teams each had two selections while the softball and men's tennis teams each had one.

The Cougars also placed a conference-high 234 athletes on the Academic All-MWC Teams for the 2005-06 athletic season.
