PROVO -- The College Baseball Foundation has named Ralph Zobell of the BYU Athletic Communications office as the sports information director of the month for February and March. Zobell is part of the first group of honorees recognized by the College Baseball Foundation in its effort to acknowledge sports information officers, beat writers and broadcasters who cover baseball.

Zobell currently serves as the baseball media relations director, coordinates BYUcougars.com and produces the game programs for basketball and football.

"Ralph is a tireless worker and spends a great deal of time working to promote our baseball program," BYU baseball coach Vance Law said. "Ralph has always done an excellent job. He's well overdue for recognition well-deserved."

Zobell joined the BYU staff in 1977 as an assistant sports information director while still an undergraduate student. In 1989 he became the head SID, a position he held until 1998.

Developing Ty Detmer's Heisman Trophy campaign in 1990 and serving as the president of the Collegiate Baseball Writers Association that same year are just two of the many accomplishments Zobell has enjoyed throughout his career.

"It's a tremendous honor for Ralph to be recognized by the College Baseball Foundation," Associate Athletic Director Duff Tittle said. "Ralph does a tremendous job. He is the consummate professional. He works hard and cares a great deal about the student-athletes in our program. Ralph is very deserving of the award."

A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., Zobell earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from BYU in 1978 and 1984, respectively. He has four children and is married to Janet Nielson.
