1984 National Championship Team To Be Honored

PROVO, Utah (Sept. 2, 2004) Marking the 20th anniversary of the Cougars' 1984 National Championship the entire team will be inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame, Friday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m., in the Wilkinson Center Ballroom.

The event begins with a dessert bar from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., with the induction ceremony to follow promptly at 7:30 p.m. Silver and above Cougar Club members are invited to attend. There is no admission charge.

The team will also be honored in pre-game and halftime ceremonies during Saturday night's game between BYU and Notre Dame.

About 80 percent of the members of the team will be in attendance, including Jim Herrmann, Kyle Morrell, Robbie Bosco and Vai Sikahema.

Other special guests include Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve, BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson, former athletic director Glen Tuckett and LaVell Edwards, head coach of the 1984 National Championship Football Team.

As part of the festivities taking place during the two days, a lithograph has been commissioned to honor the 1984 team. A total of 1,984 individually numbered lithographs will be available for purchase. One thousand of them will feature autographed pictures of the 24 starters, including Sikahema, Bosco and Lee Johnson, along with a team photo and a picture of coach LaVell Edwards. The signed lithographs will be sold for $295 plus taxes and shipping. Fans wishing to purchase one can contact the BYU Cougar Club office. The remaining 984 unsigned copies will be available at Saturday's game for $25 at the Cougar Den memorabilia store underneath the west stands at LaVell Edwards stadium.

Only two other Cougar teams have been inducted into the Hall of Fame: the 1950-51 and 1965-66 NIT Championship men's basketball teams.
